TeamMates hold dinner, seek mentors

TeamMates Host Jan 10 Pre-Game Dinner

TeamMates is seeking more mentors for students in the Bishop Heelan School system and holding a pre-game dinner at Heelan on Tuesday, Jan. 10.

The Sneaky’s dinner will be held from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. before the varsity basketball doubleheader against Sergeant Bluff-Luton. Cost for the dinner is: adults $10, couples $15 and families $20.

This year, there are 20 mentor/mentee matches in the one-to-one, school-based mentoring program in the Bishop Heelan School System, a number leaders would like to increase.

Mentors take just 30 minutes a week to visit with their students at their school during the academic year. Most matches are made based on hobbies and interests and begin when the mentee is in the 3rd grade and continue through high school graduation.

January is National Mentoring Month, an ideal time to celebrate TeamMate mentors and recruit more, according to Jacque Yaneff, BHCS TeamMates co-coordinator with Allie Mousel, Bishop Heelan High student support counselor

“This is not a homework session,” said Yaneff. “It is all about building a lifelong friend and relationship.
Every kid needs a positive adult role model and I guarantee your life will change for the better!”

This is the ninth year that Bishop Heelan has been a part of TeamMates Mentoring, a program that has grown dramatically since it first started in Omaha.

“Mentoring can be transformative and create a ripple effect that makes a big difference over time,” said Mousel.  “We guarantee you will enjoy mentoring a student!”

TeamMates volunteers interact with students at Holy Cross, Mater Dei, Sacred Heart School and Bishop Heelan High schools.
