Special Outdoor Addition will Enhance Heelan

Outdoor Terrace coming to Heelan
Posted on 11/10/2020
An outdoor terrace is being added near the front doors of Bishop Heelan High School to offer students an area for lunch, socializing, meetings, waiting for rides and outdoor classes to promote COVID-19 safety.

The terrace can also host outdoor music programs, pre-game meals, faculty gatherings and special events. Retaining walls have been constructed and soil graded. Plans call for pouring concrete in spring.

The terrace is tentatively called “Mary’s Place” to honor its location next to the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary outside of the new fieldhouse. The statue stood near the steps of old Heelan’s for decades before being moved to the new high school.

“We’re excited about how the new terrace can further enrich the high school experience for our students,” says Dr. John Flanery, BHCS president. “It gives our school community another needed area for interacting, learning and socializing.”

The terrace has been largely funded by a major donor. Tables honoring loved ones will also support the cost.

Persons interested in sponsoring an outdoor table to honor a loved one or family should contact Tom Betz at 712-226-0421 or tom.betz@bishopheelan.org.
