Plathe is Top Volunteer for Heelan Events

Volunteer of the Year: Scott Plathe
Posted on 04/12/2023
Think of a Bishop Heelan parent who pitches in for special events and fundraisers and Scott Plathe immediately comes to mind. Scott has helped with or led the food, beverage and concessions committee for the “Crusader Classic” show choir for the last 8 years. He also led the Palmer Candy band fundraiser for the past 7 years.

Working with others, his efforts have helped generate nearly $150,000 for Bishop Heelan’s band and choir.

You also may have seen him on a football field during half-time shows or at marching band competitions helping with props.

Need to serve 5,000 people over a 36-hour period? Scott can handle that. Need to sell funnel cakes at football games? He does that too. Need someone to call BINGO? Scott, and his wife, Janet, have become famous for their 2 a.m. bingo calling during Heelan’s After Prom celebrations.

Scott is now spending hours on the phone and in meetings to figure out how Bishop Heelan can host hundreds of riders for RAGBRAI this July to help Sioux City and or course, provide a few fundraising dollars for Heelan.

As a Sacred Heart parent and parish member, Scott helped chaperone school field trips, fundraised for Washington DC and served on the capital campaign committee to raise funds to expand the school and parish center. Construction is underway and will be completed next year.

He and Janet are the proud parents of Anna, a 2019 Heelan graduate, Claire, who graduates this May and Levi, a 5th grader at Sacred Heart.

When he’s not volunteering, Scott runs his own firm as a financial advisor specializing in retirement planning.

Scott grew up in Granville, Iowa, attended Spalding Catholic, where he learned service, his Catholic faith and developed his wit and infectious spirit toward life. We are proud to applaud Scott Plathe as our 2023 Bishop Heelan Volunteer of the Year.
