Party at Memorial Field

Heelan Auction Both Outdoors and Online
Posted on 06/21/2020
The "Happy Days" Heelan Auction will now take place as an outdoor event at Memorial Field  Thursday, June 25 at 6:30-10 p.m. and a virtual event online at 7 p.m. at bishopheelan.org.

At Memorial Field, the Cattlemen’s Association will grill burgers, the Sioux City Convention Center will provide sides along with beer, wine and liquor and Bullwinkle’s Ice Cream will provide dessert. Guests can watch the virtual auction on a big screen TV at the field's shelter.

The June 25 event, rescheduled from its original date in April, will reflects COVID-19 safety.  There will be sanitization stations, space for socially distancing and optional facemasks.

Over 130 generous donors have contributed gift cards, pizza for a year, vacation homes, and an adorable mini golden doodle puppy. The star feature is a 13 ft long, one-of-a kind hand-crafted shuffleboard table made of wood from the gym floor of the Pit in old Heelan, the stage and handrails. It was designed and professionally crafted by Rick Niles '84.

People can watch the virtual event, streamed from Heelan’s Auditorium, by visiting bishopheelan.org. In the hour-long broadcast Dr. John Flanery and auction chair couples will showcase sponsors and gifts displayed on the stage.

In a new feature, a “PRIDE Blitz” will encourage out-of-town alumni to give to Heelan and meet a $25,000 challenge from other graduates. Donors will see their names scroll on the screen during the online event.

Anyone can watch and bid on gifts or donate at bidpal.net/HeelanAuction.

The Heelan Auction also will honor Leonard Gill ‘53 with the “Crusader of the Year” award and Pat Collins as “Distinguished Volunteer of the Year.”

Proceeds from the Heelan Auction will benefit teachers’ salaries, according to Dr. John Flanery, BHCS president.

“We are thrilled to offer two options, a party at Memorial Field with burgers, beer and bidding and a Virtual Heelan Auction where people can watch from home,” says Flanery.

“While this is different from the upscale event we usually offer, we’re grateful that COVID cases are decreasing and we have approval to gather outside at the field. We want to celebrate our schools, our excellent class of graduating seniors and Heelan’s 70th year."

Heelan Auction Chair Couples helping to navigate the virtual auction event are: Chris and Joy Bogenrief, Ron and Katie Demers, Dave and Laurie Bentson and Mike and Julie Maas.

Supporters should buy tickets for Memorial Field and bid for gifts at bidpal.net/HeelanAuction.
