One Standard Plaid to Further Unify System

Heelan Navy Plaid to Go System-wide
Posted on 12/21/2021
Heelan navy and grey plaid will be the official plaid for ALL girls in the Heelan system in three years, as part of continued unification efforts of all schools in the Bishop Heelan School System.

Heelan navy plaid skirts will be sold for all girls in grades 1-12, and jumpers and skorts will be available in navy plaid for grades K-5.

The bright blue plaid, currently worn by girls in K-8, will no longer be sold by Dennis Uniform. To ease the transition for families, it will be accepted through the 2023-24 school year.

Parents can view the new items for Bishop Heelan at on or after Jan. 1.

To better coordinate with the navy and grey plaid, light blue polo shirts will be phased out and grey polos will be part of the new dress code for K-8.

The new dress code will take full effect fall of 2024.

Catholic schools and other private schools require uniforms to foster discipline and promote focus on school studies, according to Dr. John, BHCS president.

“We’re proud of our uniform code and that one plaid will represent Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools,” Flanery says. “Heelan’s navy plaid goes back to its opening in 1949.”

Catholic schools adopted uniforms over a 100 years ago to unify students who came from different economic conditions, Flanery adds, and uniforms continue to do that today.

“School uniforms promote responsibility and respect for both other students and teachers,” says Flanery says. “They can help reduce peer anxiety among kids and ultimately save parents money and stress.”

When Sioux City Catholic schools unified in 1999 Heelan girls wore the navy plaid and girls at each elementary school all wore different plaids. When Heelan became a system in 1999 one plaid was chosen for all elementary schools.

Old plaid uniform apparel will be collected for several American Indian reservations across the country that have asked for uniforms donations.

The updated dress code will be at under the For Parents tab. The website for Dennis Uniform, which is based in Omaha, is
