Meet Our New "Lunch Lady"

BHCS Names District Nutrition Manager

Kristen Malenosky, a 1991 Heelan grad, BHCS parent and daughter of Heelan grads, is the new “Lunch Lady” for three schools in the Bishop Heelan School System.

As the district nutrition manager, Malenosky is overseeing the Lunchtime Solutions lunch programs for Heelan, Holy Cross’ Blessed Sacrament and St. Michael and the Dual Language Academy at Epiphany Center.

That means she’s working with school secretaries and Heelan kitchen manager Rachel Kolker about feeding kids nearly 640 lunches a day (and nearly 600 more a la carte items at Heelan.) Cheryl Zobel previously handled Holy Cross.

There is extensive administrative work for lunches since the federal government supports meals. Lunches are now free to all students for the second consecutive year as part of Uncle Sam’s efforts to ease family financial stress during the pandemic.

Malenosky is comfortable with all of it. She handled administrative work for the lunch program at Mater Dei Nativity Center for 12 years and oversaw its school garden that yielded vegetables for school lunches. Most recently she served as school administrative assistant.

Comfort food always appeals and the top lunch picks at Heelan are macaroni and cheese, bosco cheese sticks and chicken ranch pasta, she says.

The Heelan grad has some special lunch memories of her own from her high school years.

“I would get a bowl of the mashed potatoes (the BEST!!), a candy bar and a coke from the vending machines. I know, not very nutritious,” she says. “No wonder I would always fall asleep in Home Ec with Mrs. Walsh! She would always tell me to eat a better lunch and I wouldn't get that "crash."

At Immaculate Conception the gravy train and the tortillas were favorites, and they’re still served today, she says, but much as changed in the past 30 years.

“We didn't have to offer certain items or focus on fruits and veggies. Today we do,” says Malenosky. “We make sure students have access to a nutritious meal of a protein, grain, milk, veggies and fruit to help them maintain focus and energy to study and learn. No more falling asleep in afternoon class due to an unhealthy lunch choice!”
