Donations Fund Major Weight Room Facelift

Upgraded Weight Room Benefits Students

Students are enjoying Bishop Heelan's weight room which was further transformed during summer with fresh paint, a new HVAC system and lighting to go along with its new equipment.

In addition to the 14 strength stations in the double-sided racks, there are new benches, barbells and 10,000 pounds of new rubber competition plates.

The upgrade can better meet the needs of students working out for class, sports or personal fitness.

A focal point in the room is the “Crusader bridge” with upper crossover bars to build strength and agility. The racks provide space for bench press, squats, pull-ups, hang clean and more.

With the new racks, students can complete a better and safer workout for individual team training, exercise science classes, conditioning, recovery and injury prevention, according to Trevor Westhoff, Heelan strength and conditioning coach.

The racks were produced and donated by Masaba, a business owned by Jerad and Peggy Higman, Heelan system parents who helped with private donations to purchase new equipment. The couple also led the 2021 Heelan Auction Fund-A-Cause appeal which raised $46,000.

Jerad  is a former University of Nebraska outside linebacker who played on the 1994 national championship team under Tom Osborne and Peggy is a fitness trainer.

“We can now give the kids a better foundation physically to train for their sports," said Westhoff. "We teach them how to move properly, and create a fun environment to teach them lifelong skills that they can carry into adulthood.”
