Dad is Volunteer of the Year

Jeremey Malenosky to be Awarded “Distinguished Volunteer of the Year”
Posted on 03/30/2022
Jeremey Malenosky has been selected as “Distinguished Volunteer of the Year” for Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools, an award that will be presented to him at the “Field of Dreams” Heelan Auction Wednesday April 6.

Malenosky is best known as the leader of “Duct Tape Dads” for Heelan’s Show Choirs, a volunteer gig he started in 2008 when his oldest son Tyler, a ‘13 Heelan grad, was performing.

Jeremey sets up and tears down a huge stage used for the annual “Crusader Classic” Show Choir Invitational which attracts nearly 30 show choirs and 2,000 parents and fans. Then after the “Classic” event, a giant fundraiser for the show choir program, he spends hours breaking down the fieldhouse setting. He takes time off from his full-time job with Echo Electric Supply to do this and works all weekend.

In addition to the “Classic” event, Jeremey has spent 14 years transporting costumes, risers, band instruments and props to performance sites and back. Then on stage his crew quickly assembles risers, mics and props before Bishop Heelan’s performance and immediately strikes the set for the next show choir to take the stage.

His work supports the show choirs for both Heelan and the middles school “Genesis” show choir. He has volunteered for some 90 performances and continually recruits other dads to create a crew since students graduate every year.

Jeremey has handled set up and tear down for Heelan Madrigal since 2009 and also runs the football game funnel cake stand for the music department since 2009 as well.

Jeremey is now the “go to” for other events, including the All Schools Mass during Catholic Schools Week and the annual Heelan Auction. For the Auction he works with others to cover the gym floor with protective tarp, rolls it back post-event and is helping with décor for this year’s “Field of Dreams” theme.

In all his activities he is cheerful, dedicated and humble.

We welcome Jeremy’s parents tonight -- Mike and Valerie Malenosky. You must have instilled a strong work ethic in your son.

In face Jeremey, an East High School graduate, married into a Heelan family. His wife Kristen (Happe) Malenosky is a ’91 Heelan grad and their children Tyler, Zach and Alycen are Heelan grads. Son Jacob is a Mater Dei 8th grader. We welcome Kristen’s parents Carol (Gerch) Happe ’66 and Chuck Happe ’67.

Jeremey Malenosky may be with Echo Electric Supply by day, but he is a HERO at Bishop Heelan High School by night and our choice for Distinguished Volunteer of the Year for Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools.
