Crusaders complete season at state track

Schaefer's silver medal leads Crusaders

Bishop Heelan’s track and field teams represented well at the state track and field meet on Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Drake Stadium in Des Moines. 


The Crusaders boys’ team finished 17th with 18.5 points. 


Below is a day-by-day look at how Heelan did at the state meet, starting with Thursday. 


Thursday

Jaron Bleeker earned the third-place medal in the high jump at 6-foot-3. That’s a personal best. 


The boys shuttle hurdle relay finished the season with a 1:03.23 time. 


Carson McInerney placed 13th in the discus with a throw of 148 feet, 3 inches. 


In the 200-meter prelims, Sean Schaefer placed 14th overall at 22.73. 


The Crusader girls 4x800 relay team finished 12th at 10:04.23. 


Shannon Cleary ran the 100 as a freshman with a 21st-place time of 13.29 seconds. 


Senior Kenley Meis placed 14th in the 400-meter dash with a time of 60.87.


Friday


Sean Schaefer earned the second-place medal in the long jump with a personal best leap of 21 feet, 9 ¾ inches. 


Hunter Wauhob placed ninth in the 110-hurdle preliminaries with a time of 14.96 seconds. 


McInerney was 23rd in the shot put with his best throw coming in at 44 feet, 7 ½ inches. 


Junior Quinn Olson got into the scoring column for the Crusaders, placing eighth (55.98) in the 400-meter hurdles. That time is a personal best. 


Meis and Cleary both competed in the long jump. Meis placed 11th (16-3 ¾) and Cleary 19th 15-10 ¼). 


The Crusaders’ girls 4x100 team placed 12th overall with a time of 50.66. 


The boys’ 4x100 team made the cut for Saturday’s final, placing eighth at 43.41. 


Saturday


The boys’ sprint medley team earned a fifth-place score with a time of 1:33.85. After qualifying for the 4x100 finals, the Crusaders did not finish the race in Saturday’s final.
