Holy Cross Band students are playing a happy tune this fall with new musical instruments funded by a $21,238  grant from the Gilchrist Foundation and a gift from Evan Niebuhr’s Memorial Fund

The grant funded the purchase of a tuba, snare drum, marimba and timpani, tenor saxophone and bari saxophone. A new flute and flugelhorn were purchased with a gift of $1,338 from Evan Niebuhr’s Memorial Fund.

“We are deeply grateful to the Gilchrist Foundation,” says Paul Niebuhr, band director. “Students who enjoy playing instruments in middle school band will be the future musicians in our high school band and gain benefits that will guide them through life.

Gilchrist Foundation grants have enhanced music at Heelan High School for the past six years. Grants have funded new band uniforms, acoustical shells to project sound in the Heelan auditorium, lighting and an enormous curtain for the annual show choir invite, an outdoor PA system for marching band performances and video equipment. The foundation awarded its largest grant to building Heelan’s Fine Arts Auditorium. The Gilchrist Foundation is a champion for the arts, conservation, wildlife and public broadcasting.
