Our History
Rooted in Faith. United in Mission. Focused on the Future.
For generations, Catholic education in Siouxland has been shaped by parishes, religious sisters, priests, educators, and families who understood that academic excellence means little if it is not anchored in faith, family, knowledge, and service. From humble beginnings in parish classrooms to today’s unified school system, Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools have remained steadfast in this mission.
A Legacy Built on Faith and Sacrifice
Our schools exist because generations before us believed deeply in Catholic education and were willing to sacrifice to make it possible. They built schools not just to teach children how to read and write, but to teach them who they are and whose they are.
Faith has always been at the center of our identity. Daily prayer, sacramental life, moral formation, and service to others are not additions to our schools—they are woven into everything we do.
A Unified PK–12 Vision
Today, Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools stand as one integrated PK–12 system, uniting multiple elementary campuses and one high school under a shared mission, shared standards, and shared purpose.
This intentional unity allows us to:
-
Provide a consistent Catholic identity across all grade levels
-
Ensure strong academic alignment and smooth transitions
-
Support students as they grow spiritually, intellectually, and socially
-
Build a sense of belonging that lasts well beyond graduation
No matter which campus a student begins on, they are part of one Crusader family from preschool through senior year.
Forming the Whole Child
Our identity is rooted in educating more than minds alone. We are committed to forming students who:
-
Think critically and communicate clearly
-
Live their faith with conviction and compassion
-
Serve others selflessly
-
Lead with integrity and courage
Academic excellence, faith formation, service, discipline, and community are inseparable at Bishop Heelan. Each shapes the other, resulting in graduates prepared not just for college, but for life.
Honoring Tradition While Embracing Growth
While we honor the traditions that built our schools, we also look forward with purpose. Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools continue to grow and adapt to meet the needs of today’s families while remaining grounded in timeless Catholic values.
Innovation in academics, expanded opportunities in athletics and fine arts, and a renewed emphasis on community engagement reflect our belief that Catholic education must be both rooted and relevant.
Our Enduring Identity
Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools are more than buildings or grade levels. We are a faith-filled community shaped by our past, united in the present, and committed to the future.
What began as an act of faith continues as a mission of purpose—educating students to know truth, live their faith, serve boldly, and lead with Christ at the center of their lives.
