Scarlett Walsh, a sixth grader at Sacred Heart School and daughter of Marty and Cathy Walsh, has won a state-wide essay competition on the American flag. The contest, sponsored by the Elks Club, asked sixth graders in Iowa to write an essay on “What the American Flag Means to Me.”

Scarlettt's essay was selected as the winner in the city and district, and advanced to state, where one girl and one boy were selected as winners. The sixth grader has been invited to present her essay at the state-wide Elks Club conference on April 28 in Des Moines
