Long-time Bishop Heelan Catholic Schools Principal Mike Sweeney is retiring after 38 years in Catholic schools, 29 of them in Sioux City.

After his education at Blessed Sacrament School in Sioux City, he graduated from Bishop Heelan High School in 1976, earned a bachelor’s degree from Briar Cliff University, then received a master’s degree from Drake University in 1990.

After initially teaching at Danbury Catholic School for nine years Sweeney became the first lay principal at Immaculate Conception-Nativity School (now Mater Dei) in 1989. After 15 years he moved over to be principal at Holy Cross School, which he has led for 14 years.

“It is a privilege and an honor to be the principal at Holy Cross School,” Sweeney said in a Globe interview several years ago. “So many people gave of themselves to be positive examples of our faith and leaders as teachers when I was growing up. I have always wanted to give back to Catholic education in the same way.”

Mike and his wife, Julie, raised four children who attended Mater Dei and Heelan.
